Broadway Lake - a 300 acre lake on Broadway Creek in Anderson County boat access is provided by a public boat ramp.
J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake - one of the southeast's largest and most popular recreation lakes. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Broad, and Little Rivers. Thurmond Lake is nearly 71,100 acres of water and a shoreline of 1200 miles. Lake Hartwell - Hartwell Lake is one of the southeast's largest and most popular public recreation lakes. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control, hydropower, and navigation project, authorized purposes now include recreation, water quality, water supply, and fish and wildlife management. Each year, millions of people utilize the many public parks, marinas, and campgrounds conveniently located around the lake to pursue a variety of outdoor recreational experiences - making Hartwell one of the most visited Corps lakes in the nation
Hartwell Lake is a man-made lake bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca Rivers. The lake is created by Hartwell Dam located on the Savannah River seven miles below the point at which the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers join to form the Savannah. Extending 49 miles up the Tugaloo and 45 miles up the Seneca at normal pool elevation, Hartwell Lake comprises nearly 56,000 acres of water with a shoreline of 962 miles. The entire Hartwell “Project” contains 76,450 acres of land and water. Interstate 85 bisects Hartwell Lake and makes the area easily accessible to visitors.
Hartwell Lake and Dam is the second Corps of Engineers project to be built in the Savannah River Basin. The first, J. Strom Thurmond Lake and Dam, was completed in 1952. A third project, Richard B. Russell Lake and Dam was completed in 1985. Congress authorized Hartwell in 1950 and construction began in October 1955. The project was completed in 1963 at a cost of more than $89 million.
Hartwell Dam is constructed of concrete and earth and spans some 18,000 feet (over 3 miles), crossing the Savannah River. The concrete section is 1,900 feet long and rises 204' above the riverbed at its highest point. Earthen embankments and dikes lengthen the dam at both ends. The spillway contains 12 large gates, each 40 feet by 35.5 feet high, for the quick release of water from the lake. Printable Map. Lake Levels. (888) 893-0678
Lake Jocassee - Salem, SC - is a 7,565 acre man-made lake in the SC mountains with 75 miles of shoreline and a 385 foot high dam. Waterfalls cascade directly into the lake and is surrounded by mountains. A variety of fish are found in these waters, including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and sunfish. Lake Keowee- is located mainly in Oconee County and extends into Pickens County. It has 18,500 acres of water and a 300 mile shoreline and is fed by the Keowee and Little Rivers. It is a man-made to generate hydroelectric power by Duke Energy. Fish found here are black crappe, bluegill, smallmouth-largemouth-white bass, and threadfin shad. Printable Map.
Lake Marion - Eutawville, SC - is the largest lake in SC, covering 110,000 acres. It is known for its big fish and abundant willdlife. (843) 761-4068
Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake - is another lake made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and has 26,500 acres of water and 540 miles of shoreline. Together with Lake Hartwell and Thurmond, these lakes and dams form a chain of lakes 120 miles long on the Georgia and South Carolina state border. The project includes about 600 prehistoric and historic sites ranging in age from the end of the last Ice Age to the early 20th Century. Lake levels at Lakes Hartwell and Thurmond fluctuate more than at Lake Russell, so people believe that Lake Russell is always full. Access from Mountain View Recreation Area. Lake Levels.
